Art Fail

I needed a quick activity that was no/little mess and only 15 minutes... I found this old Suncatcher activity set that my mother sent to me 2 years ago.

The kids hardly cared. They rolled the gooey paint between their fingers.
Sometimes they had success with the brushes.

Everyone's art ended up looking crappy, but it was a great way to get messy in a quick, yet child satisfying fashion.

The activity was a smashing success minus one hiccup... the paint had dried almost completely.  We were desperately smearing colorful paint with the consistency of toothpaste into our suncatchers.

This activity is perfect for little hands to learn control and coordination.

Check-in Before the Check-up

It's important to prep your child when they are going to the dentist or the doctor.  Let them know what tasks a doctor and dentist perform and why it needs to happen.

Ask your child:
  1. Do you know where we are going?
  2. Do you know what is going to happen?
  3. Why do you have to go?
  4. Are you afraid?
Remind your child that going to the doctor and dentist is like taking the car in for scheduled maintenance.  In order to perform well, you have to make certain everything is running efficiently.

Relieve any anxiety with hugs and motivation.  Please note that the occasional ice cream/sorbet bribe doesn't hurt.

Remember that you are your child's biggest advocate and coach.

  • Make certain that you and your child know their dentist and pediatrician by name
  • Have your child thank the dentist and pediatrician after visits

Making your health care professionals real people will help alleviate any nerves your child may be feeling.

Independence Day is always a treat.  When you have kids, going to see the fireworks display with them is like seeing it for the first time all over agin.

It's really important to provide "organic" experiences by taking your child places that will stimulate their 5 senses.

    Senses:
    • sight
    • smell
    • sound
    • touch
    • taste
