My middle child does some of the grossest things. A lot of it puts the rest of us off. But she has such thick skin that I'm not certain if what we say even bothers her. This day she decides to lick the car. Gross... Yeh. Like she literally licks the whole side of the car... "Ewww, that is so gross. What are you doing!!?" "Stop making fun of me guys!" She yells "We aren't. Stop doing such gross stuff" her older sister says back. "Yeh... Gwosss", the younger one cosigns. So in the midst of all the commotion and such, I decide to lighten the situation by interjecting... "Babe you do gross things" I say trying to comfort her. "I know." She says very frank and honest. "It puts everyone off you know". "Well that's just who I am MOOOOOOM". "Well you're my favorite Neemies" I say to her attempting to grab her hand. "Mom, that makes no sense... I'm the only one". And she flits off unaffected.

Good Mom Friends are Hard to FindAs much as we would like to, we can't choose our family. We can't even choose our kids. Genetics is an interesting game of Russian Roulette that some people lose and some people win. With that said, sometimes happiness boils down to the friends that you choose.
The holidays are here and it is time for everyone to become nostalgic about their quality of life and the people in it. I try to incorporate a thankful spirit year around so that "giving thanks" isn't seen as a seasonal response to getting gifts at Christmas.
As a mother of very young children your moments are often filled with troubleshooting or preparation or transitioning from one activity to another. Moments are never still, rarely quiet and frankly never yours.
It's important to get that hand writing practice in early! We do one letter per day. Hand writing takes patience, coordination and discipline. Having your young child sit in short spurts will help accomplish the task. As they get older you can extend the amount of time they sit. Make it fun! Once they're finished have them draw a picture on the back. This helps to expand their imagination and it helps improve writing and coordination without them know it. Happy Writing!!! Socialization, A Necessary EvilMy second child rushes in distraught, breathing heavily. She's dressed up in a ridiculous array of odds and ends from a failed attempt at her own creative expression.
"Mommy, they won't play with me!" When you have more than two kids I've found that the parenting strategy is basically damage control. When it's two it's a legal battle and you are always judging behavior and handing out mandates of equality. When there is only one it's like you're talking to yourself all the time.
The best idea I ever had was to drive around with a potty in my car. I can't say how many times I've been saved by this potty... Road trips, restaurants, park play dates, etc... The car potty has held me down on numerous occasions.
I'm not ashamed. In fact I'm a strong advocate of having a potty in your car for kids under 7. Yes 7. I am not really at the stage where I can send a kid to the bathroom alone, frankly that stage scares me even more. So once again, we were bored this afternoon... When we're bored we make up songs and do crazy stuff. This is a clip of us singing our version of "opera".
We did a call and response. I went first and then the kids. I think they did a pretty good job. https://soundcloud.com/fossilizedresin/ratched-opera Kids carry germs. PERIOD. Kids carry germs. PERIOD. They are little disease balls that are trying to destroy you. They will carry something for a week and have no symptoms and you will get knocked out for days on end. Heed my warning. Because kids explore and are learning good hygiene practices, they are more apt to carry around bacteria and germs. Also because they keep these germs all the time and because they are young, their immune system is doing a great job of deflecting all of the gross stuff.
